Keisler's order is not simple (and simple theories may not be either)

چکیده

Solving a decades-old problem we show that Keisler's 1967 order on theories has the maximum number of classes. In fact, it embeds P(?)/fin. The build are simple unstable with no nontrivial forking, and reflect growth rates sequences which may be thought as densities certain regular pairs, in sense Szemerédi's regularity lemma. proof involves ideas from model theory, set finite combinatorics.

The effect of insulin may not be so simple.

To the Editor: Drenger et al. have demonstrated that sevoflurane postconditioning is cancelled in the rat heart with type 1 diabetes mellitus and that this adverse effect by glucose intolerance cannot be restored by the adjustment of blood glucose using insulin. This study appears to have many questions regarding the mechanisms of insulin’s action, whereas we would congratulate their impressive...

Simple is not easy

I review and challenge the views on simplicity and its role in linguistics put forward by Ludlow (2011). In particular, I criticize the claim that simplicity—in the sense pertinent to science—is nothing more than ease of use or “user-friendliness”, motivated by economy of (cognitive) labor. I argue that Ludlow’s discussion fails to do justice to the diversity of factors that are relevant to sim...

Screening is not as simple as it may seem.

The first is that the guideline and the defense of the guideline reflect an attitude of paternalism toward both primary care physicians and the patient. It is unfortunate that the guideline recommends an intervention without quantifying the benefit or the harm. We recognize that the weight of evidence suggests lipid screening is a good idea, but when a mother asks, “How effective is this? What ...

Glucose: a simple molecule that is not simple to quantify.

Small increments in blood glucose substantially increase the risk of developing diabetes mellitus; but preanalytical and analytical variables, such as the absence of harmonization for glucose assays, make it difficult to correctly apply these epidemiological insights to individual patients. Harmonization can be improved if 3 variables are addressed: changing proficiency test grading from consen...
